Learning to Heal · What you learn
How you recognize your own limit
Please note: the workshops are currently held in German only. I plan to offer workshops in English at a later date. If you would like to learn this and organize a workshop in English yourself, you are welcome to send an inquiry to [email protected].
Whether you can work with others is not decided by experience, but by whether you see where your ability ends. And why protection is not a tool but a warning sign.
Learning to Heal · your own limit
Your limit begins where you become unsure. If you see that, you work safely, on your first day as after thirty years.
This is the rule I send participants home with at the end of the workshop. It applies to everyone who works with energy, and it applies to you yourself.
Where your limit begins
Many people ask me when they are allowed to work with other people. My answer doesn’t depend on a training or on a number of years. It depends on a single question: do you see your limits?
Rico’s words
A limit begins where you start to become unsure how you should help someone. And it’s okay to be unsure.
Rico Brunner, workshop
So being unsure is not a flaw. It is the most precise information you have about your own ability. Experience alone doesn’t protect you here. To me, someone who has been working for thirty years and doesn’t see their limits is just as negligent as someone on their first day. If you don’t see your limit yet, wait until you do.
For yourself you may go further than with others
What you try out for yourself concerns you. If you want to go beyond your limit for yourself, that’s your business. With another person it’s a completely different situation. You never know everything that comes along with them.
Approaching others with your perception when you are unpracticed is like driving in a car race after your first driving lesson. Someone will get hurt. That’s why, with others, you stay in the area where you feel safe. Where you don’t feel safe, you wait until you do. Then you move on.
Rico’s words
Say it where you feel safe. People aren’t rabbits. And you shouldn’t experiment with rabbits either.
Rico Brunner, workshop
The rule for the work
At the end of the workshop I give you one rule to take with you. It is short, and it covers a lot.
Rico’s words
And in energy work there’s one rule: don’t start anything you can’t finish.
Rico Brunner, workshop
From this it follows: only do what you see and understand. Only do what lies within your own range of strength. And if you notice that something frightens you or overwhelms you, leave it until you have the strength or the knowledge for it.
Understand first, then act
Many people who work with energy see a blocked spot and want to remove it. That is exactly what I warn against. The most important thing about an energy field is that it can block. It’s like blood that clots at a wound. If it didn’t clot, a small cut would have serious consequences. A blockage in the field stops a chain reaction in the same way.
Anyone who doesn’t understand this does harm with good intentions. That’s why the rule is: before you do anything, you must have understood it completely. If you don’t know something, say so. In my work I also often say: no idea, it could be something else too. Then I don’t speculate. The greatest danger in working with energy is assumptions.
Why protection makes things worse
Many people learn to protect themselves from other people’s energies. I consider that a wrong path.
Rico’s words
Protecting yourself is an illusion. The only thing that protects is inner strength. When someone is at home, nobody can break in.
Rico Brunner, workshop
Protection needs energy, and that energy comes from your own system. If you protect yourself all the time, you wear yourself out. If you shut others out, you shut yourself in at the same time. But if you are with yourself, you are protected without having to protect yourself.
This gives you a simple test. If you feel you have to protect yourself for a piece of work, keep your hands off it. Only someone who is afraid and doesn’t know what they are doing needs to protect themselves. So the need for protection is not a tool. It is a measurement: if you feel it, you are already beyond your limit.
Help where help is wanted
Your own limit also includes the other person’s limit. I recommend not helping anyone who doesn’t want it, and not pushing anyone toward a place they don’t want to go themselves. Sometimes it takes strength to bear it when someone goes a way you think is wrong. Often it turns out years later that they kept going and found their own way.
What doesn’t belong to the energy field
Working with energy has a limit of its own, too. Whatever concerns the body belongs to medicine. Field and body can affect each other, but I don’t explain physical illnesses from the field. Anyone who works with others says honestly what they can and can’t do, and refers people on where something isn’t their business. I have never had anyone be angry with me because I said I didn’t know something.
Who this rule applies to
If you are in a hard phase, you might read this page for yourself first: seeing your limit also means not carrying more than you can right now. If you want to keep what you have built, you see here why protection doesn’t help and strength does. And if you want to develop further and perhaps one day work with others, you find here the condition I attach to that. How long the way there can take is explained under If you want to work with people yourself.
Questions that come up often
- How do I know whether I’m allowed to help someone?
- Ask yourself: do I know what I’m doing, and can I finish it? If you become unsure, that is the limit. Then it’s better to do nothing and observe.
- Do I have to protect myself when I work with energy?
- No. If you feel you have to, leave the work alone. What protects is inner strength, and you practice it with the basic exercise under Being with yourself.
- May I work with others after the workshop?
- I don’t tie that to a course. The only question is whether you see your limits. Anyone who wants to work with others needs a lot of practice. More under If you want to work with people yourself.
- What do I do if I become unsure in the middle of an exercise?
- You stop, stay with yourself and observe. It’s okay to be unsure. It shows you where you stand right now.
- What if someone asks me for help I can’t give?
- Say so honestly. If you don’t know something or can’t do it, that is information, not failure.
